Adding How-to Videos to Product Packaging: Fewer Support Calls, Fewer Returns

Let customers point their phone at the image on a box, label or manual and watch a set-up video. Which products benefit, how to make the video and what to watch for on packaging.

One of the most common reasons a product is returned or customer service is called is that it wasn't set up or used correctly. The manual in the box often goes unread, and even when it is read, small drawings don't explain everything. A short how-to video solves much of this. The real question is how to get the customer to that video.

Let the box open the video

The product image or front design on the packaging can be recognised by a phone. The customer scans the QR code on the box once, points their phone at the image and the set-up video plays. No app to download. You can change the video whenever you like while packaging already printed stays the same.

Which products benefit most?

  • Products that need set-up: small appliances, lighting, furniture parts, toys.
  • Products where technique matters: cosmetics, skincare, paints and building chemicals.
  • Products with recipes or tips: food, coffee, tea and spice packaging.
  • Products with safety warnings: showing correct use on video reduces misuse.

What makes a good how-to video?

  • Short: 30–60 seconds. Split long set-ups into several short videos.
  • Clear without sound: customers often watch muted; show the steps as on-screen text too.
  • Vertical: phones are held upright; let the video fill the screen.
  • Useful from the first second: skip the logo animation and start with step one.

What to watch for in packaging design

The image the phone recognises should be detailed and high-contrast. A plain colour surface or a logo alone is hard to recognise; a product photo or patterned front works much better. Gloss varnish and lamination reflect light; prefer a matte or semi-matte finish. If boxes in the same range look very alike, make sure the product name or colour stands out on each. Results you can measure

The panel shows how many times each product's video was opened. A set-up video that is watched a lot is a sign the manual falls short for that product, so you can simplify it in the next print run. With the “Ask on WhatsApp” button shown at the end of the video, customers can reach you directly and the message says which product they are writing about.
